The music is playing, the dancing shoes are coming back out—and women in their 40s and 50s are proving that a great night out has no age limit.

Across the country and beyond, women in midlife are rediscovering something many of them once loved: going out and dancing. This time around, the experience may look a little different. It might start earlier, end earlier, involve fewer cocktails and include more comfortable shoes—but the joy of music, movement, friendship and feeling completely alive is still very much the same.

And research suggests that this return to the dance floor may do more than create a memorable girls’ night out. Dancing can support physical health, brain health and emotional wellbeing.

The Dance Floor Is Calling Again

For many women, their 40s and 50s are incredibly busy years. Careers, children, relationships, aging parents and everyday responsibilities can leave little time to simply have fun.

That’s one reason a new style of nightlife is gaining attention.

Events designed for midlife women are appearing with earlier start times and a focus on dancing, friendship and fun rather than staying out until the early morning hours. The Earlybirds Club, for example, was created around this idea—giving middle-aged women an opportunity to dance while still getting home at a reasonable hour. The concept has received national attention as it has expanded to additional cities. (AARP)

Even more interesting is emerging research into why women over 40 are returning to club and dance environments.

Researchers from the University of Leeds recently studied women over 40 who participate in electronic dance music events. In their survey of 136 women, 91% said clubbing contributed positively to their wellbeing, while more than six in ten agreed that they went clubbing as a way to escape the realities and pressures of everyday life. Maybe slipping on those dancing shoes isn’t just about nostalgia after all.

Dancing Is Exercise—It Just Doesn't Always Feel Like It

One of the wonderful things about dancing is that you don’t necessarily think of it as exercise while you’re doing it.

You’re listening to your favorite song, laughing with friends and moving your body—and meanwhile, you’re being physically active.

The CDC identifies dancing as a form of aerobic physical activity. Regular physical activity can provide immediate and long-term benefits, including better sleep, reduced anxiety and support for heart and brain health. (CDC: Moving Matters for Older Adults; CDC: Physical Activity Boosts Brain Health)

Research specifically involving middle-aged and older women is encouraging as well. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examining dance exercise among women 45 and older found positive effects on body composition and cardiopulmonary function. (PubMed)

Another study examining middle-aged women participating in line dancing identified physical, psychological and social benefits associated with the activity. (PubMed Central)

So whether your playlist is disco, salsa, country, Motown, ’80s, ’90s or today’s music, getting up and moving can be a wonderful addition to an active lifestyle.

There Is Another Benefit We Love: Connection

Wellness isn’t only about what happens physically.

Sometimes it’s laughing with your girlfriends.

Sometimes it’s dressing up when you’ve spent the entire week taking care of everyone else.

Sometimes it’s hearing a song you haven’t heard in 20 years and suddenly remembering exactly who you were when you first heard it.

And sometimes wellness is simply giving yourself permission to have fun.

Research on dance among older adults has examined not only physical outcomes but also the broader role dancing can play in wellbeing. Current research into women over 40 and dance culture also highlights feelings of connection, escape and enjoyment. (Psychology of Music; Associated Press)

At SolVita Wellness Spa, we love this trend because it reflects something we believe strongly:

Self-care isn’t about slowing down your life. It’s about helping you enjoy it.

Before the Dancing Shoes Come On… Come See Us

A great night out deserves a great pre-game.

Consider SolVita your spa edition of getting ready for girls’ night or date night.

Start With a Massage

Dancing can mean hours on your feet, so why begin the evening already carrying the tension of the week?

A relaxing or therapeutic massage can be the perfect transition from work mode to weekend mode. Let your shoulders drop, give those tired muscles some attention and allow yourself a little quiet time before the music starts.

And yes, giving your feet a little extra attention before an evening of dancing sounds like a very good idea to us.

Get Your Glow On

If you’re getting dressed up, why not give your skin some attention too?

SolVita’s facials—including our advanced Korean skincare treatments—can help skin look refreshed, hydrated and beautifully glowing.

Think of it as getting ready without having to rush.

Facial. Relax. Makeup. Outfit. Dancing shoes.

Now you’re ready. 💃

Add a Little Heat

An infrared sauna session can also be a relaxing way to unwind before your evening begins. Settle in, disconnect from the week’s responsibilities and enjoy a few peaceful minutes that are completely yours.

Because sometimes the best nights start with doing absolutely nothing for a little while.

Welcome to the New Girls’ Night Out

Perhaps the best part of this trend is what it represents.

Women aren’t aging out of having fun.

They’re simply redefining what fun looks like.

At 45, 50 or 55, you can still get dressed up, meet your girlfriends, dance to the songs you love, laugh until your cheeks hurt and make it home at a perfectly respectable hour.

And increasingly, women are doing exactly that.

The Associated Press recently highlighted how moving to music can support physical, mental and social wellbeing as people age, including mobility, balance, mood and social connection. (Associated Press)

So call the girlfriends.

Make the dinner reservation.

Pick the playlist.

Find the outfit you feel fabulous wearing.

And most importantly…

Don’t forget the dancing shoes. 👠💃
